Way back at CES 2014, Foreo, more known for their skincare gadgets, came out with a funky-looking electric toothbrush called Issa that promised to be a lot less funky than the average toothbrush, using silicone nubs that discourage bacteria growth on the brush head. That brush head has gotten an update this year — the Issa Hybrid Brush Head is a little less extreme, putting rows of more traditional bristles in the center of the silicone nubs.
The immediate challenge was to make a hybrid brush that doesn’t sacrifice the anti-bacterial properties that set Issa apart in the first place. Foreo met that challenge by using PBT polymer bristles instead of the usual nylon, making the brush feel more familiar without taking too many steps backward. The silicone nubs are still on the outer edges of the brush, but they’re now recommended for use on the gums — a good call, since over-brushing with traditional bristles can damage gums more than they help.
The new brush heads are available in matching colors for both the full-sized and mini Foreo Issa toothbrushes for $20.
